What is Kintsugi [金継ぎ] ?
"Kintsugi" is a technique unique to Japan that has been used since the Muromachi period (1336-1573) to repair and decorate broken ceramics.
Lacquer is a sticky liquid collected from the Urushi "lacquer" tree, a member of the Sumac family. When the liquid hardens over time it becomes a strong natural adhesive that can coat objects and is harmless to the human body.
The idea behind Kintsugi is not to erase or diminish cracks and damage, but to treat them as part of the objects' history. Appreciating this new form allows you to see your treasure in a different light and enhances its artistic value.
engrace accessories use a synthetic lacquer and a blended gold powder made from brass and pearl instead of Urushi lacquer. This is often referred to as "simple Kintsugi" and is considered the more modern version of the technique. Each piece is unique and made by hand.
